Supporting Breastfeeding Journeys in Ayrshire Maternity Unit

CCF Express YourselfWhen a baby is born prematurely and requires care in the neonatal unit, mums can stay with their baby in the hospital’s family rooms for as long as they need. However, there often comes a time when mums are ready to go home before their baby is discharged. This can be an incredibly difficult transition, especially for those who are keen to provide breastmilk for their baby.

Breastfeeding and expressing milk for a premature baby can present additional challenges. The early separation between mum and baby, combined with the stress of having a baby in neonatal care, can make it harder for mums to establish and maintain their milk supply. That’s why practical support, clear information, and reassurance are so important in helping mums feel confident in their ability to express and provide milk for their baby.

The Express Yourself Project aims to make this process easier by providing mums with a support pack filled with useful items and information to help them express and store breastmilk while their baby remains in hospital. Each pack includes:

  • A water bottle to help with hydration
  • A cool bag to safely transport expressed milk
  • Clear and helpful information and advice to support expressing and maintaining milk supply

Breastmilk provides vital benefits for preterm babies, helping to protect them from infections, promote healthy growth and development, and support their delicate digestive systems. For babies born too soon, breastmilk can be especially important in helping to give them the very best start.

"The Express Yourself packs are a small gesture that mean so much to the families we care for. Providing practical items alongside reliable advice helps mums feel supported and reassured, during what can be an overwhelming time. We want to make sure every mum feels confident about expressing and knows how important their milk is for their baby’s health and development."

Ashley Manchester, Infant Feeding Coordinator at Ayrshire Maternity Unit.

This project is made possible thanks to the generosity of the Jen Anderson Fund. With your help, we can continue to provide essential items, expert advice, and emotional support to families during their neonatal journey.
